Global Link leading new project on NW migration heritage
We are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a new three-year project documenting histories of migration in and out of the Northwest of England.
Migration Stories NW involves four other regional partners: Crossing Footprints Manchester, Cumbria Development Education Centre, Global Learning Cheshire and Liverpool World Centre. Each of us will work with local adults and young people to research and record individual stories of migration from the Roman period to the present day. These stories will be presented on an interactive digital map, featuring text, images and audio-visual material. We will also create a touring pop-up exhibition that will visit each of the partner locations.
Our project will help demonstrate how the NW has always been a place of migration, highlighting how people have moved in and out of the region from other parts of the British Isles and other parts of the world as a result of conflict, colonialism and trade, as well as in search of work opportunities and a better life.
We are fortunate to be supported on the project by staff from Lancaster University’s History Department and Lancaster City Museums.
The project kicked off with a meeting for partners at the People’s History Museum and Labour History Archive in Manchester in November. It was great to meet everyone and start exploring the possibilities for our project!
