UK launch of the European ‘Learning from the Past’ map
Global Link has officially launched our new online community map of Europe which charts histories of peace and internationalism during the interwar years.
On Thursday 17 October we launched the map with the 3rd Parbold and Dalton Girl Guide Unit. Global Link heritage volunteer, Chris Workman, introduced the LFTP map to the group, focusing in particular on how the map highlights the role that young people played in peace and internationalist work.
The event included an archive workshop in which Girl Guides looked at documents relating to local Scout and Guiding activity from the 1920s and 1930s and used this material to create a new entry for the LFTP online map. The group also worked with artist, Lou Andrews, to design a banner conveying a message about peace. When finished, this banner will feature in the Learning from the Past ‘living museum’ exhibition in Lancaster City Museum in summer 2020.
This was a really successful evening. The Girl Guides reflected thoughtfully on the themes the project raises and identified ways in which their own lives and concerns connected with young people in the past.
