Reimagining Rivers

Reimagining Rivers & Local Resilience Building (2023-24) was an environmental science public engagement project, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and led by Global Link. During the project we teamed up with academics from Loughborough University to explore the science of river flooding, response to flood risk and ideas for community resilience with a group of Brownies in Lancaster.

Reimagining Rivers invited the young people to engage with findings from the international EvoFlood research project which is concerned with river flooding, including understanding how global changes in river systems and dynamic populations couple to alter relationships between flood hazard and risk over time.

The project workshops – which comprised games, science experiments, field site visits to the local River Lune and creative arts – were also supported from staff from the Environment Agency and Girlguiding North West England.

The project produced two resources:

  • Flooding Mucky Dip! – a fun activity for young people (aged 7 upwards) that explores the risks of floodwater and invites discussion about how to be ready and respond to floods.
  • Flooding Fortune Teller – a playful and interactive resource, co-created with the Brownies, that highlights ways we can all be better prepared for flooding.
